Lucas Radebe
Kaizer Chiefs and Leeds United star Lucas Radebe is admired for his ball skills on the field, but off the field he is held in high regard as the father of  Lucas Junior and Owami. Tragically, Lucas lost his wife, Feziwe, to cancer in 2010 and has since taken on the mammoth task of raising their kids alone. ‘When I look at our children, I get very emotional because they remind me of her. I see her in them  – Owami has her looks; Lucas Junior has her laid-back character.’

As a presenter on Top Billing and the star of his own health talk show, The Dr Mol Show, Michael Mol has become a household name in SA. He’s also a medical doctor, a company director, a business consultant, an executive producer and a former Mr South Africa. His most important role, however, is being a husband to Jacqui and dad to their kids, Joshua, Rachael and Naethan. ‘I have the best fun with my dad – he makes me laugh. I want to be like my dad one day!’ says his eldest son, Joshua.

Graeme Smith
Proteas Test captain Graeme Smith is set to become a father for the second time this year. In 2011, he tied the knot with Irish musician Morgan Deane and they welcomed little Cadence Christine Smith in July 2012. Desmond is well known as Leon Schuster’s sidekick in the 1999 hit The Millennium Menace, as well as for his roles in Suburban Bliss, Dube on Monday, Soul City, The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency and SOS. The 44-year-old funny man may play a joke on screen, but he takes his wife Tlotliso Matsela and his three girls very seriously. ‘I love my children with every beat of my heart. They are my joy. They are special because they are girls. Girls just have the ability to melt your heart.’

Ivan Botha
Ivan Botha, who plays Pieter van Heerden on 7de Laan, has eyes for only two women – his beautiful actress wife Ciske Kruger and their adorable baby girl, Amélie. Named after their favourite French film, baby Amélie’s first friend was fellow 7de Laan co-star Hennie Jacobs’ (who plays Diederik Greyling) daughter, Nua. We wonder if she will follow in daddy’s footsteps?

With her award-winning performance in The Blind Side, Sandra Bullock proved she’s a talent to be reckoned with. But while her divorce to Jesse James dragged her name into the news for all the wrong reasons (need we go into all his affairs?) in 2010, Sandra also managed to make headlines for all the right ones – by adopting the adorable Louis. Although the adoption process had begun when Sandra was still with Jesse, she con- tinued with the process as a single mom after his infidelities surfaced. Despite her heartbreak, it was love at first sight for her and Louis. ‘All I said when I met him was “Oh, thereyou are.” It was like he had always just been a part of our lives.’

Christi Panagio
Charlize Theron isn’t the only South african star to adopt. former 7de Laan stars Christi and nico panagio, who had been struggling to fall pregnant, adopted baby girl evah in 2012. keeping the adoption quiet at first, they initially told people she was their godchild. ‘The media is such a part of our everyday life and our desire was to protect her and have her to ourselves for a while,’ says Christi.

Naomi Campbell
In 1994, Naomi famously posed with four other supermodels in one of Peta’s I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur campaigns. However, it seems something in the intervening years changed the model’s stance, because she had no problem posing in 2009 for New York-based furrier Dennis Basso’s advertising campaign in a sable coat. Unapologetic, Naomi told reporters, ‘I am still wearing fur, but I’ve made up with that guy from Peta.’ We are not entirely sure if ‘that guy from Peta’ made up with her.

Reese Witherspoon
It’s no secret that celebrities are often sent free merchandise, because companies know that once these stars are photographed with a particular item, their sales will soar. This arrangement backfired for fashion house Chloé in 2011, when Reese was snapped holding one of their $4 000 python bags. The Water for Elephants actress quickly ditched it when Peta sent her a video detailing how the snakes are maimed to create these items. Not only that, but the sale of python skin products is actually illegal in California, where Reese was seen toting the bag. ‘We have long known Reese to be a kind person, so we’re pleased – and not surprised – that she’s hanging up her python bag for good,’ said a Peta spokesperson.

Kelis
It seems the ‘Milkshake’ songstress couldn’t care less about Peta’s rants and protests against animal cruelty. When the organisation called her out for wearing various chinchilla and mink coats, Kelis responded by saying that these animals were rodents, and if it were up to her, they would all be exterminated anyway. ‘I wrote to Peta because I feel like who on Earth are you to tell me what I should wear?’ the singer sniped.

Kate Moss
The English supermodel has had so many run-ins with Peta, she is a regular on their worst-dressed list. ‘Nothing completes the transition from supermodel to super-tramp like a fur coat. If Kate could see clearly through those bleary eyes, maybe she’d clear her closet of those furs,’ the group stated. Sadly, even these scathing comments failed to stop the model from her furry faux pas.

Catherine Zeta-Jones
Peta had some harsh words for the Oscar-winning actress’s fur- and leather-loving ways. ‘With her cow-skin pants, ugly fox coat and icky alligator bag, Catherine Zeta-Jones looks like she’s working her way through Noah’s Ark with a knife. Maybe she’s getting into character for an upcoming role as a serial killer – or as a taxidermist,’ the animal rights group blasted in 2010. Catherine didn’t respond to their criticism and continues to wear animal products.

P Diddy
Not only does Diddy wear fur all the time, but the music mogul also uses exotic animals to entertain guests at his infamous parties. In 2005, Diddy really irked Peta when he had six penguins swimming at one of his soirees at a hotel in Miami. Peta claimed the animals would have been far too hot, as they are accustomed to living in cooler climates. A spokesperson from the hotel responded by saying the animals were warm-weather specimens from South Africa trained for entertainment, expos and television adverts. Well, that makes us feel heaps better … not.

David and Victoria Beckham
England’s other royal couple, David and Victoria have had their fair share of ups and downs, what with the numerous rumours of infidelity. Posh and Becks live in LA with their three sons, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz, and daughter Harper Seven. While we hardly ever see her smile, Victoria actually has a sharp sense of humour. ‘What’s David’s role? David looks good, that’s what he does. David looks good and I’m the funny one, that’s what I hear constantly. But I keep telling him that looks fade,’ she jokes.

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale
Rock-star couple Gwen and Gavin met in 1995 and dated for just more than six years before tying the knot in 2002. Ten years on, the two are still going strong and are devoted parents to two adorable sons, Kingston and Zuma. ‘We’ve both become more romantic and caring for each other, simply because we’ve seen how beautiful it

There seems to be no end in sight for one of the most admired marriages in Tinseltown. Tom and Rita recently celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary and they both took to Twitter to express their sentiments on the milestone. Rita tweeted, ‘Happy 24th anniversary to the love of my life Tom Hanks, it feels like 24 hours. Did we just get married?’. Tom posted a picture of their wedding day and captioned it: ‘This photo is 24 years old today’.

She’s known as one of the greatest actresses of our generation, with three Oscar wins and a record number of award nominations. Perhaps Meryl’s professional success can be attributed to her stable personal life. She’s been married to husband Don for 34 years and they have four children. ‘You just have to keep doing what you do. It’s the lesson I get from my husband. He says: “Keep going. Start by starting”,’ says Meryl.

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick
She played unlucky-in-love Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, but in real life SJP has been happily married to actor Matthew Broderick for 15 years. The star, however, admits matrimony is not an easy road: ‘That’s marriage and any relationship. Even connections outside of marriage run the same course – if you’re in it for the long haul you are going to go through lots of different periods.’

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith
The power couple has endured plenty of speculation on their union, but the Smiths are still going strong. They met in 1990 when Jada auditioned for the role of Will’s girlfriend in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. She didn’t land the part, but a love affair blossomed and in 1997 they tied the knot. ‘You have to be there for each other. That’s how you build great relationships,’ says Jada.

This British bombshell had a long history of period dramas with the BBC before she became synonymous with her action-heroine role in the vampire and werewolf franchise Underworld. Kate burst on to the Hollywood scene in Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbour but it was her turn as iconic actress Ava Gardner in the 2004 hit. The Aviator that cemented her place as one of Tinseltown’s leading ladies.

Forest Whitaker
An actor, producer and director, Forest’s long career in television and film began in the 1980s. In the 2006 movie The Last King of Scotland, he played the character of Ugandan military dictator Idi Amin with such aplomb he won a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award and the Best Actor Oscar. Forest followed up that performance with 2007’s The Great Debaters, where he played Dr James Farmer Snr, the first African American to earn a doctorate from Harvard University.

Nicole Kidman
The Aussie actress wore a prosthetic nose and was unrecognisable for her role as Virginia Woolf in The Hours, winning an Oscar as well as critical acclaim for her part. In 2006 she took on the role of Diane Arbus in the biopic Fur, followed by the HBO TV movie Hemingway & Gellhorn, about the author’s relationship with Martha Gellhorn. We can’t wait to see her as Grace Kelly in Grace of Monaco.

Denzel has played an array of important historical figures. In 1987 he starred in Cry Freedom as anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko and received an Oscar nomination for the role. Then came one of the most acclaimed performances of his career, that of black nationalist leader Malcolm X, in the movie of the same name. In The Hurricane, Denzel played boxer Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter, who was wrongly convicted of murder and spent more than two decades in prison before being pardoned.

Terry Pheto
This South African actress has so far had a great career both locally and abroad. Recently seen on our small screens as a doctor in the popular US soapie The Bold & The Beautiful, Terry shot to fame after starring in the local Oscar-winning movie Tsotsi. In 2007 Terry played Zindzi Mandela (Nelson and Winnie’s daughter) in Goodbye Bafana alongside Joseph Fiennes and Diane Kruger. Directors obviously think she plays a Mandela quite well, as Terry has also been cast as Evelyn Mandela (Nelson’s first wife) in the biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, due for release this year.

Morgan Freeman
The 1995 Rugby World Cup was an emotional time for South Africans. Fresh from our first democratic elections, sport played a significant role in unifying our country. When Clint Eastwood decided to make a movie about this period in our history, who better to cast as Nelson Mandela than Morgan Freeman? The movie, Invictus, also starred Matt Damon as former Springbok captain Francois Pienaar.

Leonardo Dicaprio
If there’s one actor who deserves recognition for his portrayal of numerous characters in various biopics, it’s Leo. In 2002 he played fraudster Frank Abagnale Jnr in Catch Me If You Can. Then in 2004 he starred in The Aviator as aviation pioneer Howard Hughes and won a Golden Globe for his performance. Leo collaborated with Clint Eastwood in the 2011 movie J. Edgar, a film about the FBI’s first director, J Edgar Hoover.

She’s not just a pretty face with hypnotic hips. Shakira has a mind for business too. The Colombian singer is part of a group of investors who have bought an island in the Bahamas with the intention of developing it into a world-class resort. Currently under construction, the completed Bonds Cay island will have a boutique hotel with luxury condominiums and private beaches for guests. A golf course and artists’ retreat, including art galleries and studios, should lure tourists and stars alike. And, if that doesn’t work, there’s always the incentive of bumping into Shakira on the beach.

Johnny Depp
As a sword-wielding pirate in the popular Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, it’s only appropriate that Johnny Depp has his own ship (well, it’s more like a yacht) and island. While filming Pirates, the star purchased the Little Halls Pond Cay island. Determined that his slice of Bahamian paradise would be environmentally friendly, Johnny ensured that the estate operates solely on solar power. Visitors aren’t allowed on his private retreat, but if you have some spare cash, you can always rent his luxury motor yacht, Vajoliroja.

Gloria Estefan
The Cuban-born singer is often referred to as the queen of Latin pop music and has amassed an estimated R4 billion fortune. When she’s not belting out her hit tunes on stage, Gloria and her hubby Emilio run
a number of success-ful business ventures in Miami. One such endeavour is the Costa d’Este Beach Resort – a luxury 94-room getaway that boasts a signature restaurant, bar, gym, infinity pool and spa.

Bono
He’s well known for being proudly Irish and will do whatever he can to support his country. In 1992, Bono and a few other investors bought a boutique hotel in Dublin, The Clarence. Even though the establishment has faced numerous financial woes, the rocker and his partners have managed to save it from multiple bankruptcies. Now that’s dedication.

Eddie Murphy
Although the funny man has denied it many times, it’s widely reported that Eddie Murphy bought Rooster Cay, an island in the Bahamas, in 2007. As he won’t admit to owning it, it’s not certain whether Eddie will use the property for business or pleasure. Allegedly, it’s not Eddie’s first foray into living island style; it’s believed that he once also owned Pearl, another Bahamian island.

Born in Australia, Chris, 28, and Liam, 22, started out in local soaps before making their way to the US. Chris isn’t doing too badly either – his role as Thor in The Avengers cemented his place as an action hero. He also starred alongside Charlize Theron in Snow White and the Hunstman.

THANDIE NEWTON
Her American accent is so convincing, it is easy to assume Thandie is originally from the States. But her full name, Thandiwe, should indicate that the actress has intercontinental roots: her mom is Zimbabwean and her father is British. She grew up in Zambia before moving to the UK, where she enrolled at the Arts Educational Schools London. The 40-year-old beauty studied dance at first, but an injury forced her to try acting. She has starred in hits such as Mission: Impossible II, Crash and For Colored Girls. Her most recent project was in Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds.

HAKEEM KAE-KAZIM
Born in Nigeria and raised in the UK, 50-year-old Hakeem moved to SA when he was 25. You may even recall seeing him in local ads (remember ‘Nothing tastes like Fresca!’?). After his appearance in Hotel Rwanda in 2004, Hakeem moved to Hollywood and soon landed roles in 24 and Lost. His biggest break-through, however, came in 2007 alongside Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. Catch him next in Black November alongside Mickey Rourke and Vivica Fox.

AISHWARYA RAI
Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful women in the world, Aishwarya is without a doubt Bollywood’s most successful female export. This former Miss World (a title she won in South Africa) has starred in hundreds of Bollywood films, as well as in The Pink Panther 2, Bride & Prejudice and The Last Legion. She even married into Bollywood’s royal family, the Bachchans, and her father-in-law, Amitabh Bachchan, will be starring in Aussie director Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby opposite Oscar-nominated actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

ANIL KAPOOR
Anil starred in numerous Bollywood movies before making his internationally acclaimed debut in Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire. Needless to say, it opened doors for him in Hollywood – Anil landed a role in the eighth season of TV programme 24, which garnered great reviews in the American press. The 58-year-old also starred alongside Tom Cruise and Paula Patton in the 2011 blockbuster Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

NAOMI WATTS
Born in England, Naomi’s father was the road manager for rock band Pink Floyd, which meant plenty of travelling for her family. They finally settled in Australia when Naomi was 14, where she convinced her mother to allow her to take acting classes – it paid off when she landed roles in The Ring, King Kong, Dream House and J. Edgar. Her biggest role will undoubtedly be in Diana in 2013, the biopic on
the late Princess of Wales.

And she’s miles ahead of her counterparts – mainly because her income is amplified by her fashion business interests. After leaving Victoria’s Secret, the South American bombshell started her own lingerie range called Gisele Bündchen Brazilian Intimates. Then there’s her sandal range, iPanema, which is fast becoming very popular around the world. Forbes analysts predict she will become the first self-made billionaire supermodel.

JAY-Z
He’s one of hip hop’s most powerful influences – not only in music, but also in fashion, with his unisex street-style label Rocawear. Not satisfied with having one popular clothing company, Jay-Z collaborated with friend Pharrell Williams on the Billionaire Boys Club label. The twosome will work as
a team to produce the
high-end streetwear apparel.

JENNIFER HUDSON
The Dreamgirls star has shed a lot of weight over the past two years and, as a result, is looking good in outfits she shied away from before. Her renewed interest in fashion led to a collaboration with US home shopping network QVC. Their aim is to create clothing that’s flattering for any body type, from petite to plus-sized beauties.

The rap mogul has diversified his billion-dollar empire to include everything from fragrances to vodka. One of his most successful endeavours comes in the form of his Sean John clothing line, a men’s range that combines sophistication with urban culture. The enterprise has been such a success that it records revenues of more than $100 million a year.

KATIE HOLMES
Katie’s had a rough year, what with her quickie divorce from actor Tom Cruise. Perhaps she will find solace in following in the footsteps of her pal, Victoria Beckham, as she launches her very own premier designer line Holmes & Yang. A collaboration with stylist Jeanne Yang, the collection is focused on women, with a very strong emphasis on luxe comfort.

At 40 years old, the Modern Family actress has an impressive figure and impeccable style. American retail giant Kmart decided to capitalise on her popularity by giving Sofia her own clothing line. The range includes accessories, jackets, footwear, sportswear and dresses. It gets a stamp of approval from Gloria (her character on the hit show).

CONNIE AND SHONA FERGUSON
Former Generations star Connie met Botswana-born Shona before he was a known actor. They married after a whirlwind six-month romance, after which Shona landed his breakout role in the e.tv soap Scandal!. In 2011, Connie announced she was joining M-Net’s newest soapie, The Wild, alongside her hubby. The couple has been together for more than 10 years and their on-set relationship proves that sometimes the couple that works together, stays together.

RACHEL McADAMS AND MICHAEL SHEEN
The chemistry actors emit on-screen is often very real, and nowhere was this more true than when Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling steamed up the set of hit movie The Notebook. Post-Ryan, Rachel was cast alongside acclaimed British actor Michael Sheen in Woody Allen’s 2011 Midnight in Paris. And, once again, it was love at first cut for Rachel. The couple recently celebrated their one-year anniversary.

FREIDA PINTO AND DEV PATEL
Slumdog Millionaire was the surprise Academy Award hit of 2009, while its two young lead actors, Dev and Freida, caught the world’s attention. What the public didn’t know at the time was that the film’s co-stars had stolen each other’s hearts, despite their six-year age difference (Dev was 19 and Freida 25 when they started dating). Even though their careers have since skyrocketed, their relationship seems to be firmly rooted.

She’s a Metro FM DJ, a success-ful solo artist and a host on SA’s most popular talent show, Idols. Thomas, or Bad Boy T (as he’s known to his listeners), is also a well-known DJ who currently hosts the weekend breakfast show on 5FM. The two met when Unathi was hired as Bad Boy T’s side anchor on Joburg’s popular  youth radio station, YFM. Love inevitably filtered through the airwaves and they became an item in 2004. They tied the knot in 2009 and now have two children.

JENNIFER GARNER AND BEN AFFLECK
Ben met his wife, former Alias star Jennifer Garner, on the set of Daredevil. While the film flopped at the box office, some good did come of this casting. The Garner-Afflecks have been married since 2005 and appear to be one of Hollywood’s most down-to-earth families – they are often photographed by the paparazzi doing normal, every-day activities with daughters Violet and Seraphina. The pair welcomed their third child, Samuel, earlier this year.

MICHELLE GARFORTH AND RIAAN VENTER
The Garforth-Venters are South Africa’s most eco-friendly family. Michelle and Riaan met when they took part in the local reality show Strictly Come Dancing (which Riaan won). The show was a gruelling test of endurance and Michelle says it was Riaan’s determination that won her affection. The couple wed in 2008 and had a son, Rainn, two years later. Their love continues to flourish on set, with their eco-themed television show Greenline, as well as in private.

ANGELINA JOLIE AND BRAD PITT
Theirs is probably the most talked-about on-screen hook-up of the 21st century. Brangelina met and fell in love while working on Mr. & Mrs. Smith – the only problem being that Brad was married to America’s sweetheart, Jennifer Aniston, at the time. Following his divorce a few months later, Brad and Angie became Hollywood’s hottest A-list couple. The pair announced their engagement in April, after being together for more than seven years.

Jeannie D - The Top Billing presenter and TV personality was raised in a large family where her mother, aunts and grandmother played a pivotal role in her life. ‘If you look at Africa, you realise just how important women are when it comes to building a community. Also, men who have good relationships with their mothers tend to be better husbands and partners. I really admire women like Gwyneth Paltrow – she seems to have mastered the balance between career and family.’

Michelle Obama - According to Michelle, taking care of your health is one of the most important things a woman should do – especially if you’re a mom. ‘Women need to keep an eye on their mental and physical health, because if we’re scurrying to and from appointments and errands, we don’t have a lot of time to look after ourselves. We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own to-do lists.’

Tumisho Masha - This successful The Wild star has an admiration for strong women. ‘It’s their gentle strength, fearless determination, exuberant creativity, kindness and inclusive leadership that makes them amazing people. From my mother, I learnt unconditional love, and that with hard work anything is possible.
