What is happening at Foschini Group July 2010

Few people are unmoved by music. The beat of an African drum, a favourite song on full blast or our sports heroes belting out the national anthem on the field, all send chills down our spines and transport us to a different reality.

Music can change the world because it can change people, says U2’s frontman, philanthropist Bono. And it does. One of my most vivid memories is that of Peter Gabriel teaming up with the Soweto Gospel Choir in 2007 at the 46664 concert held at Ellis Park in Johannesburg to sing his previously banned song ‘Biko’. Tens of thousands of people cheered along, shortly before Madiba walked onstage to deafening applause. The concert, which also included artists such as Johnny Clegg and Annie Lennox, was broadcast to millions worldwide, with the message that people can make a difference.

Music can also complement and change your mood. For me, The Killers are an instant energy boost, Miriam Makeba sends me to the dance floor and the Venetian String Quartet brings on a feeling of wanderlust… then there’s music for getting into the soccer spirit!

This month we chatted to Zolani Mahola, lead vocalist for Freshlyground – a culturally diverse SA band who prove that music also unites – about the official 2010 World Cup soccer anthem.

And while you’re in the soccer mood, go to page 38 for a pull-out diagram to follow the teams through the final stages of the World Cup. Also, have a look at our fashion spread (page 46) if you haven’t stocked up on your supporter gear yet.

For those of you who are tired of the sound of vuvuzelas by now, hang in there! It’s also music.
