The traditional version of the family structure is outdated.
And just as well, because it has opened us up to so much more love. In the modern family, we have relationships in which people mean …

Make Me Over

Submitted by admin on August 1, 2010 – 12:03 amNo Comment

Stuck in a make-up rut? We gave two Club members a fresh new look. By Juana Parathyras.

UP-TOWN GIRL
A 27-year-old factory worker from Delft, Lee Samuels wanted a drastic change. ‘I am so bored with my everyday look. I want something brand new and exciting.’ She loves to wear lipstick and bright red nail polish. Breakouts are her biggest skin concern.

THE LOOK
We decided to give Lee a funky, playful look that would complement her bubbly personality. The dramatic smoky eye is very wearable and great for a night out.

  • Eyebrows
Make-up artist Sebastine Pepler first plucked Lee’s eyebrows, shaping them for a groomed look. She filled in some sparse spots with an eyebrow pencil and extended them outwards.
PRO TIP: Neatly plucked eyebrows will instantly update your look. The trend is still strong and full, so don’t over-pluck.
  • Skin
For a dewy complexion, Sebastine applied a lightweight oil-free foundation to Lee’s skin. She dotted concealer on the inner corners of her eyes to brighten, and finished by defining her cheekbones with a bronzer.
PRO TIP: Make your cheekbones appear even more defined with a bright pop of colour on the apples of your cheeks.
SKIN TIP: Cleanse your skin every night, especially if you wear a lot of make-up.
  • Eyes
Lee’s eyes were lined with a soft kohl pencil and the colour blended up into the crease. Dark eyeshadow was applied to the outer corners of the eyes. A touch of metallic shadow was blended over the ball of the eyelids and her lashes defined with two coats of black mascara.
LASH TIP: If you have fine eyelashes, choose a brush with lots of bristles to space them out and make them look fuller.
LIP TIP: Strong eyes are complemented with a soft, neutral sparkle swept over the lips.

THE FEEDBACK
‘All I can say is wow! I didn’t even recognise myself. Everyone is going to ask if that is really me. To tell you the truth, not even my mom will believe this is me. This has been such a great experience. Thank you Club!’

FAIR LADY

Nombom Tapa, a 41-year-old financial service consultant from Kenilworth, has been a The Foschini Group account holder since 1989. She doesn’t wear much make-up and sticks to the basics like found-ation, eyeliner and sometimes a bit of mascara. She has one major skin concern: ‘My skin can become very dull when I get stressed.’

THE LOOK

We wanted to create a look that would make Nombom feel glam-orous and sophisticated, but would still be easy for her to do herself. Perfect for work, this versatile look can easily be dolled up with a
bright colour on the lips.

  • Skin
Sebastine prepped Nombom’s skin with moisturiser before applying foundation. Next she dotted con-cealer under her eyes and along the sides of her nose. A dusting of translucent mineral powder over the face disguised any large pores and gave her a healthy glow.
PRO TIP: Hydrated skin allows foundation to settle without looking caked and it will also last longer.
SKIN TIP: Mature skin tends to be drier, which results in dullness. Use a moisturising exfoliator once a week and apply a rich night cream to banish dry skin.
  • Eyes
A neutral colour was swept across her lids, while her lashline was defined with a dark pencil followed by two generous coats of mascara to lift and open her eyes.
PRO TIP: If you have small eyes, stay away from dark eyeshadow and mascara on the bottom lashes.
  • Lips
Sebastine made Nombom’s lips the focus of her look by slicking on a bright red lipstick.
    PRO TIP:
If you have very full lips, gloss can make them appear even bigger, so keep the colour matte.
LIP TIP: Line lips after applying lipstick for a perfect finish.

THE FEEDBACK

‘I wanted to know what I would look like after a professional team had me in their hands. I was so surprised! I didn’t think I was photogenic at all and look at me now. I never knew make-up suited me this well! Thank you for a wonderful experience.’
